Introduction to the work

Gray by Silver's third album, Time of Tree, takes nature, time, and the 'us' within them as its subject. Not wanting to treat nature as abstract or superficial, the group visited ecosystems across Korea with gardener Daegil Lee and the photo, video, and sound artists beside them, shaping the music by observing those ecosystems under his curation. In Eastern thought, 자연 (自然) means that which is so of itself. The more they contemplated nature, the more one word came to them: system. Things that change into the forms they are meant to take, and move where they are meant to be, over time. Within that vast system, they render into music the countless crossings of coincidence and inevitability, and the shape of us who belong within it. From the green scent of the forest and the silver shimmer of waves made by sea and sun to the birds of spring, the cicadas' songs that hold summer, and the heart of an urban forest, Gray by Silver hopes this music finds harmony wherever in nature you may be.

Gray by Silver

Gray by Silver is a four-member ensemble of piano, voice, daegeum (a Korean bamboo flute), and drums. Since forming in 2016, the group has steadily presented a new direction in contemporary Korean music, working at the 'gray zone' where contemporary art music, jazz, classical, and Korean traditional music meet. Moving beyond genre, they weave a wide range of subjects into narrative music. Their third album, Time of Tree (2025), won Best Global Contemporary Album at the 23rd Korean Music Awards in 2026. The ensemble has performed on international stages including Lincoln Center in New York, Colours of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, and the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Royal Albert Hall. At home, they continue to meet audiences across a wide variety of stages, from the KBS documentary special A Midsummer Night's Glacier Concert to Namsan Gugakdang, the Sejong Center.
